Menu and Exercise (02/23) recap

I've found a new love; running is my new love.  Since November I have been running on the treadmill to get my cardio in after my strength training sessions but these days I look forward to it more than any other exercise.  When I'm running I think more and is able to make plans and lay out ideas that I am too busy to focus on during my normal day.

I love hearing my breath and the peace that comes over me while I'm running.  The idea that I can push my overweight body to move in such an incredible way is motivation enough. My dream is always to complete a 5K run and I'll continue to get  physically and mentally prepared.

After living through the third coldest February in history I cannot wait for spring and to get the chance to run outside. I don't know what it will be like but I will draw inspiration from my follow bloggers who enjoy a good run such as KLP from savingourstrands.

Anyway here is my reacp of this weeks menu and exercise;


  • Oven fried chicken tenders. This is a favorite in my house because you get the fried looking without all the extra calories from the oil.
  • Lamb stew with red potatoes; this was delicious even got my son to try it.
  • Brown rice and peas, Jamaican style
  • Large green salad with romaine lettuce, red bell pepper and shredded carrots. 


Monday- 30 minutes Zumba
Tuesday- 30 minutes high intensity Biggest loser cardio workout
Wednesday-1 hour body pump  and a 2 mile run on the treadmill
Thursday- 30 minutes Zumba
Friday- 1 hour Pilates followed by a 3 mile run on the treadmill
Saturday- rest day
Sunday- rest day

Wash Day- Fifteen Weeks post

The time I made it to fifteen weeks was not so easy; yes for the last eight weeks I've had protective style so that makes it easy.  My plan was to rock my crochet braids for the month of January and do my relaxer touch up, but as luck or tangles would have it, I decided to wig it for the month of February.  Well February is almost over and I think I'll try this wig business out until spring.

The beautiful part about wearing a wig is that you have access to your hair to moisturize and wash.  After taking down and detangle and remove the shed hairs from my hair, I was little surprise of how much hair I have. I can't wait the to see what my length is but that can also wait until spring.

Anyway here is how this week's wash day went;

Prepoo- Detangled with my detangling oil mix then sat under my conditioning cap for 15 minutes. I didn't feel the need to do my normal prepoo because my hair felt moisturized from last was day.  

Shampoo-  After allowing my hair to cool I shampooed with  Creme of Nature sunflower & coconut detangling conditioning shampoo.  As usual i only lather once paying close attention to my scalp, before rinsing with warm water.

Deep Conditioner- T-shirt dry to get out the excess water  before coating my hair with my conditioning oil mix (coconut, grapeseed and avocado oil) followed by Creme of nature argan oil intensive conditioning treatment. I then sat under my conditioning cap for an hour or so because I was too busy watching The Voice. I then rinsed out the conditioner using warm water followed by cool water before wrapping in a t-shirt to dry.

Leave-in and moisturizer- After t-shirt drying for 15 minutes I applied Ettenio moisture reign daily conditioner and air dry.  When my hair was about 90 percent dry I applied Ettenio creme de la creme daily moisturizer and put my hair in three plaits.

My hair is still feeling soft and moisturized; I'm on a high it is roughly three weeks to spring so I hope it last.

Healthy Lifestyle- Deal With It

With all the social media out there more and more people are finding themselves alone.  Loneliness can play havoc on a person's physical and mental health.  Do you find that you eat more or consume more alcohol when you are alone?  Do you give up on your pursuits because you believe that no one will notice?

These are all signs of loneliness but they are also precursor to depression. Depression is a mental illness and  if left unchecked can erode all the positive aspects of your life. Friends and family will tell you to snap out of it but that is easily said then done.

Here a few ways that can help you combat the feeling of loneliness and also help your social life.

1> Join a Gym-   Joining a gym has two benefits, one you can get healthy and the other is that you'll make friends and have social interactions.  The benefit of exercise alone with boost your mood and confidence which will lead to better social interactions.

2> Join a group of like minded people- if social interaction is what you crave, then a group that caterers to that need is ideal.  This group will not only help you with your social life but you can form fulfilling relationships. has some really great groups that a specific to your area and interest.

3>  Pick up a long forgotten hobby or start a new one-  Having a hobby can help to calm and can go a long way to keep you mentally healthy.

So when you are having mood swings, insomnia or feeling as if you are alone in the world remember that sitting home wallowing in self pity won't help the situation.  So take go to the gym or call up a  friend or your sister and go have dinner or even dancing.  The world is full of love, fun and happiness go out and grab it with both hands.

Product Review- Ettenio Moisture Infusion

Cost- $15 purchased from or can be found in your local beauty supply store in Jamaica.

Claims/Blurb- Ettenio Moisture infusion is a deep penetrating moisture conditioner that is formulated to infuse very dry, brittle, damaged hair with moisture packed emollients. Coconut and avocado oils team up with ceramide rich wheat germ oil to provide deep moisture penetration. Castor oil cleans the scalp of impurities, while honey, aloe, and botanical extracts gives a soothing, nourishing infusion to each strand.

Ingredients- Distilled water, botanical extracts of chamomile, rosemary, nettle,saw palmetto, burdock, horsetail, basil, moringa, catnip,lavender,thyme,green tea and black tea; Aloe vera juice, conditioning emulsifier, coconut oil, Jamaican black castor oil, wheat germ oil, avocado oil, panthenol, honey, vitamin E oil, potassium sorbate, fragrance.

Pros- This conditioner  does not contain parabens, sulphates, mineral oil or silicones, that alone is great pro for this conditioner.  This deep conditioner is very thick so a little goes a very far way; it also has great slip and is easily distributed.  The instruction is to cover with a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for 20 minutes to get the desired results.  I would say they are on the money with that instructions, because after 20 minutes the product have disappeared in your hair and your hair feels very soft and moisturized.

Con- I find that this deep conditioner works best for natural hair, more so than texlaxed hair. When i use it on my texlaxed hair, I find that the moisture does not last, however when I use it on my mom who has natural hair she enjoys the benefits they touts.   Maybe the mixed of ingredients does not work for my hair chemistry.  The one other con I found was that it small very botanical but then it has a large variety of botanical extracts.

My Take- The ingredients are all natural and it does provide the moisture it touts, however it just does not work for my texlaxed hair.  My mom who is natural have being enjoying the benefits of this deep conditioner for almost an year.  As with any product it will work like a dream for some, while it does not work for others.  I love how thick and creamy it is and at $15 the 8 oz jar generally last about six washes.  Even though it smells like an herb garden the smell goes away after the rinse.  I would recommend this product. (This product was bought with my own money and I have no affiliation with Ettenio)

Menu and Exercise (02/16) recap

Mother nature needs to calm down, because whoever ticked her off has finally gotten the point (I hope).  I don't remember being this cold in my entire life and the prospect that I'll ever feel warm again is not in the near future. Anyway with cold weather we tend to be less active, so my goal for this week is to ensure that I get in quality workouts but to also participate in more social activities.

My goal seems simple enough until you lace up those sneakers put on two layer of close and get into  cold car, the little man on your shoulder (as depicted in movies) is saying fool go back inside the warm house.  I chose not to listen because I have a bigger goal and I'm much tougher and badder than mother natural.  So after a week of sub zero weather I accomplished my goals and feel great that I was able to push through.

Monday- 30 minutes Zumba ( my living room has become my personal exercise studio)
Tuesday- 30 minutes biggest loser low intensity cardio
Wednesday- 1 hour body pump followed by a 2 mile run on the treadmill
Thursday- 30 minutes Zumba
Friday- 1 hour Pilates followed by a  mile run on the treadmill
Saturday- Rest
Sunday- Rest

Let me tell you working out with a wig has given me a level of anxiety that is not normal.  I keep thinking that in one of my Pilates pose or the ab workout in body pump the thing was gonna come cascade to the ground.  Thanks  be to God that was not the case.


For the last few months have have a smooth for breakfast, however the smoothie had become boring.  So to ramp it up a bit I began adding chia seeds to the mix, let me tell you these things keep you fill like no tomorrow.  The one drawback I find it that I'm constantly thirsty, which isn't a terrible thing because it forces me to keep up my water intake.

My menu consist of ;

  • Grilled Barbecue boneless chicken thighs; I first grilled the thighs on my George Foreman grill the covered them with barbecue sauce and put in the oven for 30 minutes.  Putting them on the GF grill got rid of the fat and also precook them making the whole process easier.
  • Chicken and barley soup; It is so cold outside everyone needs a pot of soup in their refrigerator. 
  • Brown rice with red beans
  • Baked Salmon; this is for my son he loves salmon while I can tkae or leave it
  • A large green salad; ( romaine lettuce, shredded carrots, red bell peppers, and dry cranberries)

Wash Day- Rockstar

Having a great wash day will have you dancing around your house and pretending like you are a rockstar. This wash day was one of those days.  For the first time in three weeks my hair looked and feel like it should, yes I'm fourteen weeks post relaxer but my hair behaved and felt great.

This wash day I only used my favorite product and I believed it made a world of difference, so here is my wash day recap.

Prepoo-  Detangled with my detangling oil mix. This mix has coconut, avocado, olive, jojoba, and vitamin E  oil and a few drops of peppermint and tea tree oil.  Before prepooing with Cantu shea butter leave-in repair cream and Loreal total repair 5 conditioner under my conditioning cap for 45 minutes.  After allowing my hair to cool I rinsed with warm water. It felt so soft and silky I want to stop at the point to ensure the good feeling last, but I have to shampoo or else my scalp rebels.

Shampoo- Shampooed with my favorite shampoo; as usual I only lather once and paid attention to my scalp to ensure that I have an itch free week.  I was very excited that my hair still felt silky after rinsing with warm water.  Let the good time roll!

Deep Conditioner- Coat  my hair with my conditioning oil mix before applied a generous amount of ORS replenishing conditioner and sat under my conditioning cap for 45 minutes. My conditioning oil mix contains coconut oil, grapeseed oil and avocado oil.  After allowing my hair to cool I rinsed with warm water followed my cool water to close the cuticles.

Leave-in conditioner and moisturizer-  T-shirt dry for ten minutes, then air dry for another ten minutes, once my hair was about 90 percent dry i applied my leave in and moisturizer and roller set. My leave of choice was Ettenio moisture reign and the moisturizer was Ettenio creme de la creme. I'm running low on my Ettenio stock so I'll be replenishing soon.

In the morning after removing the rollers I applied a few pumps of ORS coconut milk antibreakage serum and put my hair in to plaits and donned my wig.

I was partying like a Rockstar at this point and was overjoyed that my hair is back to normal and looking  and feeling soft and silky.

Menu and Exercise (02/09) recap

The slogan "Stress kills" is real, especially for us who have very stressful jobs.  This pass work week had me understand why people self medicate.  Thankful I now have a daily exercise routine that helps me to relax and put my day into prospective.

This week was hard not only at work but also the weather was brutal; here is a recap of this week's menu and exercise.


Monday- 30 minutes Zumba; nothing like dancing your troubles away
Tuesday- 45 minutes Biggest Loser Hi-Lo cardio workout
Wednesday- 1 hour Body Pump and a 1 mile run
Thursday- circuit 2 of Jillian Michaels 30 day shred
Friday- 1 hour Pilates and a 3.5 mile run ( I was running off the stress and anxiety of the day)
Saturday- Rest Day
Sunday- Rest Day


  • Lamb chops; I got the recipe from a recipe group I joined on Facebook. 
  • Turkey meatballs with homemade sauce, my friend gave me the recipe for the sauce because I was telling her how much my son love meatballs.
  • Baked Salmon
  • Quinoa with red kidney beans
  • Green salad topped with cranberry 

With all the cooking I am doing, one day (maybe) I'll enjoy cooking.  The good part of attempting to cook healthy is that you acquire a wide range of recipes.  The odd part is of all this is that I am current working on compiling a journal of recipes.  I'm the coming months I will share a few of these recipes with you.

Wash Day-Happy Dance

Last wash day was a test of my faith and almost had me doing a impromptu cut.  Anyway I walked away from the ledge and got a wig instead. This was my first protective style since I began my hair journey and was not prepared for a month of new growth coupled with a month of shed hair. In the past after having braid or weave I would go the the hairdresser to get my hair washed and style and i would walk out with beautiful hair.

Well I guess it is why it is called a journey because you are learning with each step and process; and last week was a lesson in patience and having realistic expectations.

Here is how this week wash day went:

Prepoo- Put my hair in five sections and detangle each section with my oil mix (coconut, olive and grapeseed oil). After thoroughly detangling each section I coat with Cantu Shea butter conditioning repair cream and put on my conditioning cap for 45 minutes.  After allowing my hair to cool I rinsed with warm water before wrapping with a towel. I was so happy that my hair finally looks and feel the way I like it.

Shampoo- Shampooed with Creme of Nature sunflower and coconut detangling shampoo. This is my all time favorite shampoo of all times because it not only cleanse but also conditions.  Even after rinsing out the shampoo my hair felt soft and smooth.

Deep Conditioner- Deep conditioned with Crecepelo deep conditioner and my oil mix ( olive, coconut, grapeseed, avocado, vitamin e, jojoba, peppermint and tea tree oil), and sat under my conditioning cap for over an hour.  After removing the conditioning cap I sat around watching Ultimate Survival Alaska before I rinsed out the DC.  Rinsed with warm water followed my cool water to close the cuticles.  I love how my hair looks and feel; I am one step closer to getting my hair back in balance.

T-shirt dry for five minutes, the air dry for fifteen minutes before applying leave-in and moisturizers.

Leave-in and Moisturizers-  Once my hair was about 80 percent dry I applied Crecepelo leave in conditioner and Ettenio moisture reign and roller set.  In the morning after taking the rollers out I applied a few drops of OGX antibreakage coconut serum and put in three cornrows.

The ease of a wig cannot be duly expressed but I just know I'm enjoying the ease of it.

Menu and Exercise (02/02) recap

This past week has been very difficult for me, and because of that I was not able to exercise once this week.  I know one week does not make or break a healthy lifestyle but I feel as if I'm missing something because I have not sweat at all in the past seven days.  I was so happy that was able to plan a few meals because the snow storm and the impromptu trip for work.

Here is a recap of this weeks meals and exercise (or lack of exercise)


  • In honor of Super Bowl I made my famous honey BBQ chicken wings.  These wings are not fried but bake in the oven then tossed with my homemade honey BBQ sauce. 
  • Baked whole chicken, I like doing the whole chicken because it last the entire week and it has both dark and white meat.
  • Oven roasted cauliflower (my son love this) I season with salt, pepper, oregano, rosemary and basil before roasting.
  •  Made a bowl of green salad top with cranberries and walnut.

Exercise ( or lack of)

The only day this week that I did any exercise was on Monday when I dug my car out of nine inches of snow before I had to leave for work. Mind you, I do not do physical activities at 6 in the morning because I have very long and stressful work days.  In my mind that 45 minutes of shoveling was worth at least two days of vigorous exercise.

Wednesday was my mother's birthday so I skipped my Body Pump session to celebrate her special day with her. I don't think I have met another person who loves their birthday as much as she does.

Unfortunately, I had to travel for work Thursday and after driving for seven hours all I want to do was sleep, which is what I did.  I was still feeling the effects of driving so I passed up by beloved Pilates session a my bed.

Wash Day- Free at Last

After four weeks of crochet braids, I was so over the braids. Even though I was still getting compliments and my hair and the crochet braids were moisture I need a change. Taking those babies was such a tedious and time consuming task.  So after  2 1/2 hours my hair was finally free of them.

Prep- Took each cornrow out and remove shed hair with my fingers before a comb through with a wide tooth comb followed by a smaller comb.  When I was satisfied that I have removed all the shed hair I applied my oil mix to the section.  My oil mix consist of olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, vitamin E, Jojoba oil, a few drops of peppermint and tea tree oil. Let me tell you four weeks of  shed hair is no joke; there was a point I got so scared that I might not have enough hair left after it was all said and done.

Prepoo-   I prepoo with Cantu Shea butter leave in conditioning repair cream for roughly an hour and a half under my conditioning cap. I think my hair was singing hallelujah when it caught a glimpse of  my favorite prepoo.  Once my hair was cool I rinsed with warm water to ensure I go most of the oils out.

Shampoo-  Shampooed with OGX awapuhi ginger shampoo to each section ensuring I pay attention to my scalp.  I felt my scalp getting excited about getting a proper cleansing.  I lathered once and rinsed with warm water. I am not liking this shampoo at all; so this my be the last time I use it.

Deep Condition- Deep conditioned with Mega Growth anti-breakage strengthening deep conditioner, under the conditioning cap for 15 minutes and allowed my hair to cool for 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water. I followed up with Loreal Total repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm for three minutes before rinsing with cool water. I wanted to use a protein conditioner because I wanted to strengthen my hair after such a long stretch of just moisturing.

Leave-In and moisturizers- T-shirt dry for fifteen minutes before applying Creme of nature strength & shine leave in conditioner and allowed to air dry for about half an hour.  I then applied Ettenio Moisture reign and set my hair in 6 flexi rods.

I am currently twelve weeks post and after a month of not touch my hair I was a little off my game.  After I removed the flexi rod I was so disappointed about the outcome that I put on a head-tie and went out an bought me a wig.  I figured the wig would give me allow me to stretch another four weeks and still have the option to get my hair back into balance before I do a relaxer touch -up.
